SimSimi is a chat product from SimSimi Inc. in Seoul that has run since 2002. Its App Store description pitches a companion for when you are bored or lonely, with responses drawn from interactions taught by its community and the option to create personal SimSimi characters. The current website is organised as an AI character chat: a directory of popular characters, from the original yellow SimSimi to fantasy, drama and roleplay personas, with character creation and a points wallet, and it opens in Korean by default with a language selector.
It needs a clear content warning. Apple rates the app 16+ with mature or suggestive themes listed as frequent, profanity or crude humour and sexual content or nudity as infrequent, and user-generated content and chat as features. SimSimi publishes a content policy, applies word filters in some languages and has reporting tools, and says it serves hundreds of millions of users in 81 languages, but its own material acknowledges that perfect safety cannot be guaranteed, and the service was reportedly suspended in Brazil in 2018 after complaints of sexual language, bullying and threats. Parents should read the policy before allowing younger teens to use it.
The app is free with in-app purchases from $0.29 to $2.99, including a $2.99 no-banner-ads purchase, a $2.99 membership and point or boost packages spent on chats. The site names no models behind its characters, and the older community-taught chatbot retrieves replies that users have contributed, which is a route by which unwanted material can enter conversations.
