Aleph Alpha is a German foundation-model company founded in January 2019 by Jonas Andrulis and Samuel Weinbach in Heidelberg, positioned as a sovereign, European alternative to U.S.-based large language model providers for government and enterprise customers.
The company builds and operationalizes large language models covering text, image data, and strategic reasoning, and works directly with enterprises and government agencies to deploy models inside their own infrastructure rather than only through a shared public API, a positioning built around European data sovereignty and compliance requirements. Funding scaled with that ambition: after early seed and Series A rounds in 2020 and 2021, Aleph Alpha closed a $500 million Series B in November 2023 with backing that included the German Schwarz Group, parent of Lidl.
Aleph Alpha serves governmental agencies and large enterprises across manufacturing, finance, and public-sector work that need customizable, self-hosted AI rather than a consumer chatbot. Pricing isn't published anywhere on the site; deployments are scoped and quoted directly with the company based on organizational needs.
