Google AI Studio is a browser-based development environment for prompting, testing, and building applications on Google's Gemini models. Google launched it on December 13, 2023, as the successor to the earlier MakerSuite, releasing it alongside the Gemini API itself.
Developers get a central prompt workspace with adjustable model and parameter settings, support for multi-turn chat prompts and system instructions, and native code generation that can scaffold a working app directly from a prompt. Google has continued layering in agentic tools and a rebuilt interface, most recently pairing AI Studio with Google Antigravity for moving from rapid prototyping to autonomous development.
The tool suits developers prototyping against Gemini before committing to production infrastructure, as well as non-technical users experimenting with prompts and generation. Access to AI Studio itself is free, with a rate-limited free quota generous enough for iterative testing; scaling beyond that requires enabling billing on a Gemini API key, charged under Google's standard pay-as-you-go API pricing rather than a separate subscription.
