Autonomo Technologies removes checkout counters from physical retail stores using ceiling-mounted computer-vision cameras, a shopper taps a card or phone on entry, picks up items, and walks out while the system tracks and charges automatically. The Hamburg, Germany company was founded in 2021 by James Sutherland and Patrick Muller-Sarmiento, a former Metro CEO, and has processed transactions for more than 20,000 customers across brands including Edeka.
Rather than requiring self-checkout kiosks or handheld scanners, Autonomo's ceiling cameras track what a shopper picks up in real time and settle the charge automatically once they leave, targeting convenience stores, gas stations, and grab-and-go retail where staffing a till is higher-priced relative to basket size. The system is built GDPR-compliant for the European retail market it primarily serves.
Convenience store chains, petrol stations, and bakeries looking to extend opening hours or cut staffing costs without losing sales are the target customers, not large-format grocery retailers running full-service checkout. Autonomo does not publish store-by-store pricing; deployment cost is scoped per location through direct sales contact, and the company has raised £3.8 million in seed funding to date.
