ShapeScale is a robotic-arm hardware scanner that rotates 3D cameras and infrared depth sensors around a person in under a minute, then uses its algorithms to build a photorealistic 3D avatar and analyze body composition, girth and volume from over 15 million data points per scan. Its companion app lets a user or client compare scans over time with heatmaps showing exactly where they gained or lost, rather than relying on a single weight number or an unaided mirror. Built by Shape Inc, a Y Combinator-backed company founded in 2015 by Martin Kessler and Alexandre Wayenberg in San Francisco, the product has been covered by TechCrunch, Engadget, CNET and Digital Trends, and has shifted primarily toward personal trainers, medical spas, weight-management clinics and health clubs rather than direct home purchase.
ShapeScale is a physical device rather than pure software, so adopting it means finding a well-lit 5-by-5-foot space free of nearby mirrors and direct sunlight, and results are validated against DEXA scanning with a stated 3.46% average error rate rather than lab-grade precision. On-page reviews are mixed at the edges: most business customers report strong client engagement, but at least one verified review cited difficulty moving the device and sharing client logins across multiple staff accounts.
A monthly lease is $199 billed annually ($2,388 a year) or $299 billed monthly, both with a $199 delivery and setup fee, unlimited warranty, and up to 100 monthly active users. A one-time purchase is $9,990 with a 2-year warranty and up to 250 monthly active users. Both options include a 45-day trial period, commercial licensing, and cloud storage and processing; additional monthly-active-user capacity can be added to either plan for an extra fee.
