CodeGeeX began in 2022 as a research project from Tsinghua University's Knowledge Engineering Group, trained on a 13-billion-parameter multilingual code model across more than 850 billion tokens of code. It was released publicly in September 2022 and has since moved from academic project to commercial product under Zhipu AI (now branded Z.ai), one of China's most heavily funded AI labs.
The model was benchmarked on HumanEval-X, a multilingual extension of the HumanEval coding benchmark the team built to test translation and generation across languages rather than Python alone. In practice, CodeGeeX runs as IDE extensions for VS Code and JetBrains products, generating completions, translating code between languages, and answering questions about a codebase through a chat panel.
CodeGeeX suits individual developers who want an AI pair programmer without a subscription, since the plugin costs nothing for personal use. Teams that need on-prem deployment, fine-tuning on private codebases, or dedicated support move to an Enterprise plan priced by custom quote.
