GitHub Copilot launched in 2021, before ChatGPT existed and before "AI coding assistant" was a category with dozens of entrants, introducing inline AI code suggestions to a massive existing developer audience already using GitHub daily. That early launch and built-in distribution through GitHub itself gave it a scale advantage newer competitors have had to build from zero.
The product has expanded well past its original autocomplete-only scope: chat-based assistance, an agent mode for multi-file autonomous changes, and support for multiple underlying models beyond OpenAI's now sit alongside the inline suggestions that originally defined it. Integration reaches across GitHub's own interface, VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, and more.
A free tier covers limited monthly completions and chat, and paid plans start around $10 a month for much higher usage. For any developer already working inside GitHub's ecosystem, Copilot's default presence and the sheer size of its existing user base remain a meaningful advantage over competitors building adoption from a smaller starting point.
