ExplAIn (explain-ai.com) is a directory that grades AI applications on transparency under the EU AI Act and GDPR. It isn't an app that explains source code. If you searched for an Explain Code app to understand a function or a legacy script, this listing isn't the one you want.
What ExplAIn Is
ExplAIn is a transparency directory for AI applications. Each entry carries a letter grade from A to F, built from four weighted pillars: the application itself, the model, the vendor and the infrastructure.
Entries also list vendor details, named subprocessors, policy documents and data categories. Vendors can claim a listing to correct or complete it. One example entry covers an energy-use forecasting application at the utility Eneco, scored at 56% weighted overall, with the model pillar still unassessed.
That last detail matters. A score is only as good as the data behind it, and some entries are marked unverified or low confidence.
Who Should Skip It
Skip ExplAIn if you want a tool that reads code and describes it in plain language. The pages we've seen show no code explanation feature, and we won't guess at one.
Pricing and free access aren't stated on those pages either.
Use it if you're a compliance, procurement or privacy lead who needs to see who processes data behind an AI product before you approve it.
How to Pick a Code Explainer Instead
A code explainer earns its place on four checks. Make them before you paste proprietary code into anything.
- Where the code goes. Look for stated data retention and whether your input trains the model.
- Language coverage. Check that your stack is named, not implied.
- Where it runs. An editor extension fits daily work better than a web box.
- Pricing shape. Per seat, credits or usage changes the bill fast.
Ironically, check one is where a directory like ExplAIn helps: it can show a vendor's named subprocessors before you commit.
