The tool works by analyzing the geometric structure of a face in an uploaded photo and comparing that signature against an index of images crawled from social media, news sites, and other open web sources, returning a ranked list of visually similar results with confidence scores and source URLs. It is referenced in Bellingcat's open-source investigation toolkit as a resource for verification and research work, alongside identity-fraud checks that individual users run on their own photos.
FaceCheck.ID targets investigative researchers, journalists, and individuals checking their own online exposure or verifying a suspicious contact, rather than regulated identity-verification use cases like hiring or access control, which the service explicitly excludes. Searches use a credit system priced from $19 for 150 credits (each search costs about 3 credits) up to $597 for 10,000 credits, purchasable through cryptocurrency.
