Harmonai is an open-source research lab focused on generative audio for music, founded in March 2022 by Zach Evans with backing from Stability AI. Evans left Microsoft to start the project as a Discord community for artists and developers before it grew into a formal Stability AI lab.
Its flagship release, Dance Diffusion, is a family of open, publicly available diffusion models that generate short one-to-three-second audio clips and can also interpolate between or style-transfer longer recordings, applying image-generation-style diffusion techniques to sound instead of pixels. Models are released openly and are accessible through platforms like Replicate as well as Harmonai's own community channels.
It suits musicians, sound designers, and developers experimenting with generative audio who want open models to build on rather than a polished closed product. Everything Harmonai releases is free and open source, with community access centered on its Discord server of roughly 30,000 members.
