Latitude is the game studio behind AI Dungeon, a text-based interactive fiction game that uses large language models to generate open-ended stories from player input. Founded in 2019 by Nick Walton and Alan Walton in Provo, Utah, with $3.3 million in seed funding from NFX and others, the studio built AI Dungeon around the premise of letting players type any action and have the AI narrate a coherent continuation.
Players choose a genre, setting, or existing scenario and then freely type actions, dialogue, or story direction, with the underlying model improvising characters, plot turns, and consequences in response. Latitude has since expanded past the original AI Dungeon into Voyage, a newer platform for building custom AI-driven RPG worlds with persistent NPCs, built on a World Engine the company says took five years to develop.
The platform suits players who want improvisational, unscripted storytelling rather than a fixed narrative, along with writers and game designers experimenting with AI-driven worldbuilding. AI Dungeon is free to play with limits; paid tiers run from the Adventure plan at $9.99 a month up to Legend at $29.99 a month for more credits, faster generation, and unlimited image generation.
