Recognising handwriting is what makes a maths solver usable in practice. The problem a student is stuck on is in a notebook in their own writing, not in a format anyone wants to retype – and typing an integral correctly is itself a skill that the person struggling with the integral may not have. Photographing it removes the step where the tool becomes more effort than the problem.
