SafeWaters combines the forecasts ocean users normally gather from several places – surf conditions, underwater visibility and tides – with shark activity data, aimed at surfers, spearfishers and beachgoers.
Underwater visibility is the quietly useful one. It is the forecast spearfishers and divers most need and the one general surf services rarely provide, since a day with excellent swell and no visibility is a wasted trip. The site also maintains a shark encounter news feed alongside the forecasts, and offers comparison and location search.
Read the shark risk forecasts as information, never as a safety guarantee. Shark presence is not reliably predictable, a low-risk forecast is not an assurance of safety, and no model should change the precautions you would otherwise take. Local advice, lifeguard guidance and posted warnings remain the authority. Treated as one input among several, the aggregation is genuinely convenient; treated as permission, it would be dangerous.
