withoutBG removes image backgrounds, returning PNG cutouts or alpha mattes, and offers the same capability four ways: a hosted Pro API at around 1.95 seconds p95, a native macOS app with drag and drop, a GIMP 3.0 plugin, and an open-weight model under Apache-2.0 you can run yourself via Python or Docker.
Publishing the model under a permissive licence is the unusual decision and the one that matters. Background removal is a commodity capability sold almost entirely as a metered API, and an Apache-2.0 model means a business processing large volumes can stop paying per image entirely, which very few vendors in this category would willingly offer.
Input formats cover JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, TIFF, BMP and GIF, with 50 free credits on a new Pro account and credit packs or a subscription beyond that, though no figures are published. Self-hosting means running and updating the model yourself, the open model will trail the Pro one in quality, and cutout accuracy on hair and transparency remains the hard case for every tool in this class.
