AI Tool Pricing in 2026: What 3,969 Tools Actually Cost

Every AI tool listing on this site records what the product costs to start using and whether it has a free tier. With 3,969 listings across 27 categories, that adds up to a usable picture of what AI software actually costs in 2026: not what any single pricing page promises, but what the entry point across a whole market looks like when you line it all up.

Here is what the catalogue shows, with the method and its limits, so you can judge the numbers yourself.

The four findings that matter

The median paid AI tool starts at $19 a month

The mean is $79, a gap that tells you this is not one market. A small number of enterprise products drag the average more than four times above the midpoint.

Half of all AI tools have a free tier

2,043 of 3,969, or 51.5%. Free access is the default expectation here, not a growth tactic.

The spread between categories is about 25×

Legal AI has a median entry price of $250 a month. Image Generation, Writing, Audio, Education and Research all sit at $10.

2023 was the founding spike

352 of the tools in this directory were founded in 2023: more than double 2022, and more than three times 2024.

What a paid AI tool costs to start

Across the 2,618 listings recording a published starting price, the distribution is heavily bottom-weighted. Two in five start at nothing, and the most common paid entry point is between $10 and $24 a month.

The tail matters more than its size suggests. Only 42 tools start at $500 or more, but those 42 pull the market average from $19 to $79. Any “average AI tool price” figure that does not say whether it is a mean or a median is telling you almost nothing.

Price by category: a market split in two

Sorted by median monthly entry price. The pattern holds consistently: categories selling into a company’s legal, security, HR or revenue function price an order of magnitude above categories selling to an individual doing creative work.

Free tiers move in the opposite direction to price, and more sharply than you would expect. 81% of gift-finder tools and 74% of chatbots offer one. In Legal AI, 12% do. A category’s free-tier rate is a fair proxy for whether it sells to a person or to a procurement process.

When these companies were founded

1,649 listings record a founding year. Plotted, the ChatGPT effect is impossible to miss: a single year accounts for more than a fifth of them.

The drop after 2023 needs reading carefully. It is not proof that fewer AI companies were founded in 2024 and 2025. A directory finds companies once they become findable, and a 2025 startup has had less time to build the coverage that gets it listed. What the shape does show reliably is how unusual 2023 was.

Method, and what these numbers are not

The dataset is the Challenging Voice AI tools directory as of 21 September 2026: 3,969 published listings across 27 categories. Prices are the lowest advertised recurring price on each vendor’s own pricing page, recorded when the listing was written or last updated. They are normalised to US dollars a month: euro, sterling, rupee, lira and won prices convert at fixed rates, and annual-only prices are divided by twelve.

Where an enterprise vendor publishes no price at all, the figure is the publicly reported entry contract, and the listing says so. A $0 entry price counts only where a free plan exists. “Has a free tier” means a free plan that does not expire, not a trial.

This is not independent price testing

Every figure comes from what vendors publish. We did not buy the products or verify billing.

Enterprise pricing is under-represented in the medians

Tools quoting “contact sales” carry no starting price and are excluded from the price calculations, which almost certainly makes the enterprise categories look cheaper than they are.

A directory is a sample, not a census

These 3,969 tools are the ones we found and listed. Categories we cover more deeply are represented more heavily.

Prices drift

Each listing carries its own last-reviewed date; this snapshot is only as current as those.

To check any single number, every listing behind it is public: browse the full A–Z index, or start from the category directory.
