Insect Sound Identifier is a web tool for naming an insect from its sound. A user records five to thirty seconds through the browser microphone or uploads a WAV, MP3, M4A or OGG file up to 25 MB, then selects the clearest five to twenty seconds to send for analysis.
A free recording check first tests whether the clip contains a usable sound signal. A full identification then returns a likely insect name and a written reason, and the site adds reference recordings of crickets, katydids and cicadas to compare against. Optional clues such as location, date and time, and up to three photos can be attached, but the site states that automatic identification uses only the audio.
Payment is by credit pack with no subscription: a starter pack of three identification credits at $2.99 and a field pack of ten at $6.99, with results kept in the user’s account.
