Duolingo, founded in 2011, built the most widely recognized language-learning brand in this category through gamified daily lessons, streaks, and a large free tier, well before Duolingo Max, its GPT-4-powered premium tier, existed as a separate offering layered on top of that established base app.
Max adds two specific AI features to the core Duolingo experience: Explain My Answer, which gives a detailed grammatical explanation when a user gets something wrong rather than simply marking it incorrect, and Roleplay, simulated conversation practice with an AI partner in realistic scenarios, extending past Duolingo's traditional exercise format into more open-ended conversational practice.
The base Duolingo app remains free, while Max adds AI features for around $14 a month on top of that free foundation. For an existing Duolingo user who has hit the limits of the gamified exercise format and wants deeper grammatical explanations or open-ended conversation practice specifically, Max extends the app millions already use rather than requiring a switch to a different platform entirely.
