FaceApp is a mobile photo editor built around AI face transformations: it can age or de-age a face, change apparent gender or hairstyle, adjust expression to a smile, and apply a range of beautification and creative filters, all from a single selected photo. The app has been named App of the Year on both the App Store and Google Play and the company states it has been installed by more than 1 billion people, making it one of the most widely used consumer AI photo tools. It is operated by FaceApp Technology Limited, incorporated in Cyprus.
FaceApp drew significant privacy scrutiny in 2019 after reports, tied to its Russian-linked founding team, raised concerns about where uploaded photos were processed and stored, prompting warnings from US lawmakers at the time. The company’s founder stated then that photos were processed on Google Cloud Platform and Amazon Web Services rather than sent to Russia, and its current privacy policy states that photographs and videos are used only to provide the app’s editing features, are cached encrypted with cloud providers for 24 to 48 hours after the last edit, that FaceApp does not retain the decryption key for that cache, and that it does not sell personal information or disclose user photos to third parties beyond that temporary processing. Users who want data removed sooner can request it directly through the app’s settings. Anyone uploading a photo of another person should still get their agreement first, since any face-editing tool changes how a real person appears.
The core app is free to download, with a premium subscription unlocking the full filter library, faster processing and an ad-free experience; exact subscription pricing is set through each app store’s own listing rather than published on the marketing site.
