Damon Chen, a former Cisco software engineer, acquired the project from its original creator in May 2023 for 20,000 dollars when it was a weekend project called looseleaf.ai with no revenue, then rebuilt and grew it as PDF.ai.
Chen scaled the bootstrapped, San Jose-based product past 350,000 users and more than a million monthly website visitors without raising venture capital, reaching over half a million dollars in annual revenue. Beyond the chat interface, the API lets developers build document parsing and extraction directly into their own applications rather than using PDF.ai only as a standalone web tool.
PDF.ai suits individuals and small teams that need to extract information from PDFs fast, as well as developers who want document parsing as an API rather than a UI. The Hobby plan is free, with paid plans starting at $17 per month for the Pro tier, scaling up to Ultimate and Enterprise plans.
