Viam applies a software engineering model to robotics. Historically each robot is a bespoke integration of drivers, firmware and control code, which makes the second robot nearly as higher-priced as the first. Viam abstracts hardware into consistent APIs so that motors, cameras, sensors and arms are addressed the same way regardless of vendor, and the control logic becomes ordinary software.
The platform spans the entire lifecycle rather than one stage: prototyping on a single machine, then data capture, machine learning, deployment and fleet management as the same project scales to many units in the field. Multi-language SDKs mean teams can work in languages they already use instead of specialised robotics toolchains.
The advantage compounds with fleet size. A one-off research robot may not need this; an organisation deploying dozens or hundreds of units gets configuration management, remote updates and fleet observability that would otherwise have to be built in-house.
