Deep Nostalgia is an AI-powered photo animation feature built by genealogy company MyHeritage, founded in 2003 and headquartered in Or Yehuda, Israel. Deep Nostalgia itself launched in February 2021, licensing deep-learning video reenactment technology from Israeli AI company D-ID to bring stillness in old photographs to motion.
The technology detects a face within an uploaded photo and applies pre-recorded driver videos to generate blinking, head turns, and smiles, without needing the user to write a script or record reference footage. Within 48 hours of its 2021 launch, over 1 million photos had been animated on the platform, and MyHeritage later extended the concept with LiveMemory, which adds camera pans and simulated depth to static images.
Family historians, genealogists, and anyone digitizing an ancestor's portrait use Deep Nostalgia to add a moment of motion to archival photos. Access starts free with a handful of animations, then requires either the standalone MyHeritage Photo plan, priced around $49.90 per year, or a Complete subscription that bundles photo tools with genealogy records.
