GPT Calculator is a small web tool, built by an independent developer, Adnan Qureshi, that estimates the token count of a piece of text and what it would cost to send to a GPT model. A user pastes a prompt, picks a model and gets back a token count and an estimated rate. It once ran on a hosted API, shown with a sample cURL request and JSON response, but the site now states plainly that the endpoint is no longer served and that the same calculation runs in the browser on the online tool page instead.
The tool labels itself, on every page, as an independent archived tool, not affiliated with OpenAI and not an official OpenAI service. Its model list stops at GPT-4, GPT-3.5 and the older GPT-3 Ada and Davinci models, with nothing from OpenAI’s current lineup, so token counts and rates for newer models cannot be checked here, and the site itself points users to OpenAI’s own pricing page and tokenizer packages for the most accurate results. Treat any number from this page as a rough, dated estimate rather than a current price quote.
The tool is free, with no account, subscription or payment of any kind found on the pages reviewed.
