If you want an Instagram automation tool that ChatGPT or Claude can operate for you, Blotato leads when you’d like an AI agent to publish on a schedule and run your DM automations, starting at $29 a month, with the caveat that each automation sends a fixed reply rather than chatting with the person. InstantDM is the one to try first if Instagram is your main channel and you want each scheduled post to carry its own auto-DM for less.
Two different things get called AI here. An AI agent operates the tool from a chat, writing the post and creating the DM rule, while an AI chatbot sits inside the DM and writes each answer itself.
How this list is ordered, and what it leaves out
These six are ordered first by how many of the two jobs they cover, publishing posts and sending automated DMs, then by how much of that work an AI assistant can run through the vendor’s own MCP server, then by starting price. Every price and feature comes from the vendor’s own pages, read on 6 October 2026, in US dollars.
We haven’t connected one Instagram account to all six and compared delivery, so there’s no reply-speed test here.
Building it yourself is excluded on purpose. A Make or n8n scenario calling Meta’s Instagram API can cover both jobs, but it’s a project rather than a product, so it’s answered in the questions at the end instead of ranked. Schedulers that never touch DMs sit in our roundup of AI social media management tools.
| Rank | Tool | Free plan | From | Best at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Blotato | No, 7-day trial | $29 | Scheduling + DM automations for AI agents |
| 2 | InstantDM | Yes, 500 DMs a month | $9.99 | Instagram posts with the auto-DM attached |
| 3 | Metricool | Yes, 1 brand | $20 | Planner, reports and comment Flows together |
| 4 | Manychat | Yes, 25 contacts | $14 | Multi-step DM conversations |
| 5 | Chatfuel | No, free trial | $18 | An AI assistant trained on your business |
| 6 | Later | No, 14-day trial | $18.75 | Planning how the grid looks |
Every figure except Blotato’s is the yearly-billing rate. Blotato’s $29 is billed month to month.
1. Blotato, scheduled posts and auto DMs that AI agents run through MCP

Blotato is a social media API built for AI agents like ChatGPT and Claude. Through one subscription it publishes to nine networks, Instagram included, and sends automated DMs from Instagram accounts and Facebook Pages.
Its MCP server is why it ranks first. In a single chat, an assistant can draft a Reel caption, schedule it with blotato_create_post and then build the comment rule with blotato_create_automation: comments, messages or both as the trigger, optional keywords, and a reply capped at 640 characters with three link buttons at most.
Starter, at $29 a month, covers 20 connected accounts plus 1,000 active contacts, which are the people your DMs and comment replies reach in a month. Creator is $97 with 6,000 contacts and Agency $499 with 15,000. The 7-day trial covers every feature apart from API keys and MCP, and creating an API key during the trial switches you to the paid plan straight away.
The honest limit is the reply itself. An automation sends the fixed message you or your assistant wrote, the same way every time, and doesn’t hold a conversation. A rule aimed at one specific post can only pick posts Blotato published, though an account-wide keyword rule reaches the rest.
2. InstantDM, for posts with the DM attached

InstantDM is an Instagram DM automation tool built on Meta’s official API. It covers comment-to-DM, story replies, keyword triggers, a follow gate and email capture, with Facebook Page automation from Legend Pro upwards.
It does both jobs, scheduling a post, Reel or carousel with the auto-DM already set. Its MCP server lists 22 tools that let Claude or ChatGPT publish, answer comments publicly or by DM, read the inbox and trigger existing flows, and InstantDM says nothing goes out until you approve it.
The free plan gives one Instagram account 500 DM automations a month, with AI comment replies. Legend Pro costs $9.99 a month billed yearly for unlimited automations at up to 800 an hour, plus scheduling. Trendsetter, at $24.99, adds the API, MCP and a Flow Editor whose AI agent node runs on your own OpenAI, Claude, Gemini or DeepSeek key, and paid plans can be tested free for seven days.
Its plans list Instagram and Facebook automation only, so other networks need another scheduler. Its published MCP tool list has no tool for creating a new automation, so rules are still set up in the app.
3. Metricool, for Flows plus reports

Metricool puts a planner, analytics, reports and a social inbox in one account. Flows adds comment and DM automation on paid plans: a DM for each comment, keyword replies inside DMs, DMs for story replies and instant comment replies.
Its official MCP server is available on all plans, the free one too, and works with Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor among other clients. The published tools schedule and edit posts and read analytics, best posting times, competitors and ad campaigns across ten networks.
Free covers one brand, 20 scheduled posts a month, 30 days of analytics and the MCP server, though LinkedIn and X are left out. Starter costs $20 a month billed yearly for up to five brands and adds Flows, while API access arrives with Advanced at $53.
Two caveats. The pricing page says Flows cost nothing extra only for a limited period, so that may change, and the MCP tool list has no Flows or inbox tools, so an assistant handles the posting while DM rules stay in the app.
4. Manychat, for DM conversations

Manychat automates conversations on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook Messenger and Telegram, with WhatsApp, SMS and email joining from Pro. Comment replies, follow-to-DM and email collection are among its use cases.
This is the chatbot side of the AI question. Pro includes Manychat AI (still labelled beta in its help centre), which learns your business details and voice so it can answer DMs and FAQs, reply to positive comments and steer each conversation towards a goal you set.
Free allows 25 active contacts on two channels. Essential is $14 a month billed annually for 250 contacts and Pro $29 for 2,500, and either can be tried free for 14 days.
Contacts are the billing unit, so every person past the allowance is charged as an overage, though a threshold you set can cap it. The plans cover conversations rather than publishing, so posts need a separate scheduler.
5. Chatfuel, for AI replies from a knowledge base

Chatfuel sells AI chatbots that answer customers on Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook. On Instagram, it automates conversations in post comments, stories, mentions, DMs and ads, with keyword replies and a live chat for questions the bot can’t answer.
Its assistant writes replies from a knowledge base you fill with services, products and FAQs, plus instructions on tone and workflow.
Its pricing page lists no free plan, though each plan begins with a free trial. Business costs $18 a month billed yearly, $216 a year, with unlimited active contacts and $20 of AI credits each month.
AI replies draw on a fair-use allowance. Past it, the bot pauses until the period resets or you renew, unless you connect your own OpenAI key, and keyword replies and button flows don’t count towards it. The pricing page lists no post scheduling.
6. Later, for grid planning

Later is a scheduler built around a drag-and-drop Visual Planner, with Link in Bio, best-time-to-post suggestions and Reels audio for Instagram.
Auto-publishing covers Instagram (business or creator profile), Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube, Threads and Snapchat, and hashtags can go in an Instagram first comment. A social set holds one profile on each supported network, eight in total.
Starter is $18.75 a month on yearly billing, with a single social set, one user and a monthly cap of 30 posts per profile, after a 14-day trial. Growth, at $37.50, adds the social inbox, approvals, a second set and user, and a 180-post cap per profile.
Replies in that inbox are typed by you, on the web, across Instagram DMs, comments and mentions. The pricing page lists no automated DMs, so keyword replies mean pairing Later with a DM tool.
How we rate these
There’s no numeric score on this list. The ranking applies the rule above to each vendor’s published plans, product pages and help docs, and it isn’t a lab result.
Manychat, Chatfuel and Later each do one of the two jobs, and none mentions owning an MCP server on the pages we read, so starting price sets their order. That’s a ranking on cost, not on quality.
What would be worth measuring is how often an AI-written DM needs correcting compared with a fixed message approved once. Manychat, Chatfuel and InstantDM all sell AI replies, and none of the pages we read publishes that figure.
What to check before you buy
- Jobs: publishing, automated DMs or both, since half of this list does only one.
- AI role: an assistant operating the tool from a chat, or a chatbot writing replies inside the DM.
- MCP scope: which actions the vendor’s server exposes, because posting and DM rules aren’t always both there.
- Billing unit: active contacts, DM volume, brands, social sets or a fair-use AI allowance.
- Overlap: which app controls each conversation in Meta’s settings when two DM tools share an account.
- Post targeting: whether a rule for one post can reach posts published from another tool.
How to choose between them
Start with what the AI should do. If ChatGPT or Claude already drafts your captions and you want it to schedule the post and set the keyword rule in the same chat, Blotato fits, with the reply staying a message you approved. If you want an AI writing each answer inside the DM, Manychat Pro and Chatfuel are built for that, and InstantDM’s Trendsetter plan does it with your own model key.
Then decide whether one subscription should cover both jobs. InstantDM is the lowest-priced paid option here for scheduling Instagram posts with the DM already attached, and Metricool suits you if analytics and reports matter as much as replies. Later plus a DM tool also works, after the overlap check below.
If your AI assistant should handle posting and automated replies across more networks than Instagram alone, Blotato is where we’d start, provided a set message you approved is enough for your DMs. Our roundup of AI agents covers the assistants that drive these tools, and AI workflow automation tools covers Make, n8n and the build-it-yourself route.
Questions buyers ask
What is a DM automation tool?
A DM automation tool sends a direct message for you when someone comments, replies to a story or writes to your account, usually only when their text holds a keyword you picked. Meta’s API only lets these tools message people who commented or wrote first.
Can AI manage my Instagram account?
Partly, and it depends which kind of AI you mean. With Blotato connected over MCP, ChatGPT or Claude can schedule posts, create DM rules, read the inbox and send a reply you approve, but between chats the automation only sends the fixed message it was given. Chatbot features such as Manychat AI, Chatfuel’s assistant and InstantDM’s AI agent node write each reply themselves.
Which of these are free?
InstantDM, Metricool and Manychat have free plans, covering 500 DM automations a month, one brand and 25 active contacts respectively. Blotato’s trial runs 7 days and Later’s 14, while Chatfuel’s pricing page doesn’t give its trial length.
Can I build this myself with Make or n8n?
Yes, on Meta’s Instagram API. You need an Instagram professional account, a Meta app with its app ID, app secret and long-lived access tokens, and a webhooks server that receives comment and message events. Standard Access covers accounts you own or manage, while serving anyone else’s account needs Meta’s App Review and Business Verification. Blotato sells the hosted version, with official nodes inside n8n and Make, REST endpoints, plus an MCP server.
Can I run a scheduler and a separate DM tool on one account?
Yes, with two checks. Meta’s Conversation Routing gives one app control of each conversation, and Blotato’s help pages say follow-up messages get rejected while another app controls the conversation, so set the default app in Meta’s routing settings. Instagram also allows one private reply per comment, so two tools listening for the same keyword can’t both answer it.
How do the billing units differ?
Blotato and Manychat count monthly active contacts. InstantDM caps monthly DM automations on its free and multi-account plans and sets hourly limits on its single-account paid plans, Metricool prices by brand, Later by social set, and Chatfuel caps AI processing while keeping contacts unlimited.
